Calling all Irish and Irish at heart! St. Patrick’s Day, a celebration honoring the patron saint of Ireland and Irish culture, is almost here. Falling on March 17, it’s a day to wear your best green gear, attend a lively parade, and tuck a shamrock in your pocket for good luck!

However, are you aware of the historical elements that helped shape this occasion? We put together a guide to help you understand St. Patrick’s Day from the inside out (and also some fun ideas to get in the spirit!)

Green or Blue? – The color green is synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day, but believe it or not, St. Patrick was originally linked to blue – “St. Patrick’s Blue,” in fact! Over time, this changed to green most likely due to the influence of Ireland’s beautiful, lush landscapes and also the shamrock.

The “Lucky Charm” – Speaking of the shamrock, do you know how it came to be associated with the holiday and luck? It is said that St. Patrick originally used the shamrock to explain the holy trinity, which morphed it into a religious symbol. However, today it is identified as a sign of luck due to a 20th century greeting card campaign.

Delectable Dishes – St. Patrick’s Day food is truly a treat. There’s nothing like a hearty plate of corned beef and cabbage paired with a delicious brew. For dessert, try speckled bread, or “Bara brith,” a traditional Welsh loaf made with dried fruit. We found a great recipe that we’re excited to try!

Parades and Style – Interestingly enough, the way St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated today started in the United States! Parades and dressing up are both vital components and we recommend going all out. Pair your best Irish attire with a bangle stack featuring some festive charms such as the Four Leaf Clover, Token of LuckFortune’s Favor, or the new Claddagh supporting the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation. Prefer something a little less literal? The Ladybug, SeashellElephant, and Horseshoe bangles all symbolize good fortune and prosperity. Don’t forget to mix in some green beaded pieces from Cosmic Messages and Color Palette for a pop of celebratory color!
